Choose your change: What hermit crabs can teach us about growth
Feeling the squeeze of your current role or routine? Sometimes growth starts with discomfort—not because something is wrong, but because something new is ready to emerge. Inspired by the humble hermit crab, I’ve written about how we can navigate change with more awareness, resilience, and self-compassion. Whether you're leading a team or leading yourself, this metaphor offers a fresh way to think about development. Read the full piece here and reflect on what your “next shell” might be.

Have you ever felt stuck? You might sense that something no longer fits, but stepping into the unknown feels uncertain. This is where the hermit crab offers a surprisingly powerful metaphor.
Hermit crabs grow by leaving behind their old shells when those shells become too small. They do not discard the past out of frustration. Instead, they move forward because growth demands a better fit. This idea can help us understand personal and organisational development. Discomfort is not a flaw. It is often a signal that change is calling.
Growth begins when comfort ends
We all have comfort zones. These are places where routines feel familiar and safety is high. But when those zones begin to feel tight, energy drains and learning slows. The next space is the stretch zone. This is where curiosity grows and new possibilities emerge. If discomfort becomes too intense, we enter the panic zone, where learning shuts down and change feels overwhelming.
Progress happens when we find the balance between challenge and support. It is about knowing when to stretch and when to pause.
Change is a process, not a leap
Change often follows a rhythm. First, we let go of what no longer serves us. Then we enter a neutral space that can feel uncertain or exposed. This is where most learning and transformation occur. Eventually, we settle into new habits, relationships, or roles that reflect our growth.
This process is rarely linear. Sometimes we try something new and return to the old. That is not failure. It is feedback.
Practical steps for navigating change
Whether you are an individual or part of a team, these questions can help guide reflection:
- Where has comfort turned into constraint?
- What signals in your body, mood, or relationships suggest it is time to stretch?
- What helped you through past transitions?
- Are you tolerating discomfort for the sake of growth, or avoiding change because of fear?
Coaching provides a space to explore these questions with clarity and support. It is not about pushing you to change. It is about helping you choose your change with confidence and purpose.
Final thought
Growth does not always mean movement. Sometimes staying and stretching within your current shell builds depth and mastery. But when it is time to move, do so with self-compassion and intention.
